answer. >> what about this jewish lobby business? he apologized for using that phrase, but listen to this exchange with lindsey graham. >> name one person who is intimidated by the israeli lobby in the u.s. senate. >> the use of intimidation -- i should have used influence. >> he could not name one person publicly. this is gamesmanship of the first order. you have conversations with plenty members of congress, and they feel one way about some of the issues in the middle east and feel they simply cannot move an inch on questions involving israel. >> is chuck hagel in command of the issues that he will be grappling with here? >> i do not think anybody would have come off well. it was a halting performance by chuck hagel, and chuck hagel, to underline what nina said earlier, is not a verbally- nimble person. he is not known for sound bites, not somebody that you go to if you want a quotation on a deadline. he will give you thought full context. >> god forbid. on immigration. some of the dos and don'ts are don't use phrases like illegals or aliens and never say anchor-baby. instead, why not use undocumented immigrant when referring to those who are here without, well, documentation. and when addressing border security, don't ever say "send them all back" or "electric fence." how about the enforcement of our borders. the hln is a group devoted the bringing more voters into the gop, is highlighting that the president broke his promise on the immigration reform in the first term, but they caution not to focus on amnesty, and to avoid at all costs president reagan's immigration reform as an example that applies today, so it got me wondering when i heard senator john mccain getting straight to the point this week. >> how do you convince the republicans about the path to citizenship? >> well, look, i will give you a little straight talk. look at the last election. look at the last election. we are losing dramatically the hispanic vote. >> so did senator mccain get the same memo? maybe he got the other memo, the one that sold all of the congressional memo

to use that as a bargaining chip again. we saw how damaging bringing into question the credit worthyness of the government. the fight should not be should we pay the bill? >> there is an interesting question about in retrospect if republicans leveraging the debt limit to get a bill that cut spending by $1 to $2 trillion going forward whether that was worth it? they introduced liquidity risk. if you don't cut spending we're not going to vote for a debt limit increase. it worked. the president agreed to cut the spending by a significant amount. now, would you like that negotiation had resulted from not having made that threat? absolutely. but do you think it would have occurred? there's the difference. i would never be one to advocate that congress should not increase the debt limit. they should. when this came up in the summer of 2011 i wrote that and they put that in the pages of "the initial review." i was arguing against those who say let's look and creating a cash crunch. that is the wrong thing to do. congress has the ability to decide what they want to attach to the legislation. tha

. what can you tell us? >> according to a senior administration official, they did make the decision to release the photo. president obama said in an interview last week he enjoys skeet shooting at camp david. a lot of people questioned that assertion and called on the white house and asked if he really went skeet shooting. press secretary carney in an interview said the president's comments were real and that he does skeet shoot. a lot of people said where is the proof? this is the proof about that. you have congressman marva blackburn challenge him to a skeet shooting contest. you have the nra saying the president was trying to align himself with pro gun rights people. the white house said look, the president was responding to a question about whether or not he has ever engaged in this type of sport. the president answered yes, he does. here's the proof. >> here's the picture. from 1600 pennsylvania, we will check back with you later. now to the latest on the hostage situation in alabama. police are in constandpoint communication with the man who allegedly snatched a 5-year-old boy

[laughter] they will pop up as we come. now, i would like to welcome politico star manu ragu. [applause] thank you for coming in. thank you very much. was the "gang of eight" a secret? was their detective work in uncovering it? >> yes. they did not want to let on how much work and progress was being made behind the scenes. in washington, whenever word starts leaking out about what is happening, those talks blow up. as they were negotiating this was happening at the time of the fiscal cliff negotiations, much of the media focus was happening on the fiscal cliff. the staff was meeting, the senators were meeting, and they really only had the first meeting after the holidays. last wednesday, when they were close to finalizing that agreement. it was not until over the weekend that they actually finalize did and announced it on monday. things moved rapidly. on

[cheers and applause] >> good afternoon, everyone. good afternoon, everyone. madam secretary, four years ago i stood on this same spot and had the honor of introducing you to the men and women of the department of state. on that first day on, you've touched the lives of millions and millions of people around the world. left a profoundly positive mark on american foreign policy and you've done enormous good for all of us and for the country we serve. we will miss you deeply. system. and number four, establish a better process for admitting future workers into the u.s. the four democratic and four republican senators wish to get momentum from the call for immigration reform. they're similar to the principles laid out by the president in the campaign last year. but it highlights deep conflicts between the parties as the specifics of the policy are hashed out. to his part, the president sounded amenable to compromise. >> we've been debating this for a very long time. it's not as if we don't know technically what needs to get done. there will be rigorous debate about many of the details, and every stakeholder should engage in real give and take in the process. but it's important for us to recognize that the foundation for bipartisan action is already in place. >> the operative word there was details because, despite all the headlines of a bipartisan group of senators ripe for comprehensive impression reform, it will come down to the details of the proposal, details that matter a tremendous amount to many people, and it's the details that could prove the legisla

was an enlisted soldier and rose to sergeant. a noncommissioned officer with the infantry, a grunt as they used to say in vietnam. this is navy pilot john mccain with his squadron in 1965 before he was captured. hagel made reference to the vantage point an enlisted man has in war. >> i saw it from the bottom. i saw what happens. i saw the consequences and the suffering and the horror of war. so i did question a surge. i always ask the question, is this going to be worth the sacrifice, because there will be sacrifice. in the surge case in iraq, we lost almost 1,200 dead americans during that surge and thousands of wounded. now, was it required? was it necessary? senator mccain has his own opinion on that shared by others. i'm not sure. i'm not that certain that it was required. >> you know, the horror of vietnam, where i wasn't -- i always point that out -- the guys who were, into the jungle, fighting an enemy you couldn't see. there were no p.o.w.s in the jungle wars. they didn't take prisoners. you know, what we did with ours, we turned ours over for god knows what kind of treatment. that was

on the response to the milestone week to the dow, let's go to kristen welker at the white house for us. good saturday morning to you. what is the take on the latest economic news, after the rocky start with the negative gdp number? >> good morning, alex. a real mixed bag this week. the white house responding as they typically do, when we get one of these jobs reports or gdp reports, saying, look, these are signs that the economy is recovering, but that there is still a lot of work left to be done. particularly on the jobs report, to take that part, alex. the white house pointing that the jobs numbers were revised last year and at the ends the e month to show higher hiring. the fact nah manufacturing, construction, had a strong showing in the jobs report, but, of course, the negative side of that, the unemployment rate did tick up to 7.9%. that is indication there is more work to be done on the economy. republicans pointing to that number and the gdp report which showed the economy basically shrunk to say that the obama economy is not working. you look at the gdp number, what is interesting,

i'd say almost purely destructive because it has, in fact, led us to some short-term budget cuts that are harmful. it has not led to any resolution of long-term issues which i don't think is possible in this political environment. >> is there any way now to create a bunch of jobs? >> oh -- >> how? how would you create jobs right now? >> if we could do a slug of federal aid to state and local governments that would let them rehire school teachers they laid off and restart the road repair project they've put on ice. right there you could create over a million jobs directly and a half million more indirectly through the effects of demand. if we did that, within 18 months, the unemployment rate would be somewhere in the low sixes. it's -- technically, economically it's the easiest thing in the world. politically we know it's not going happen. it's all about the politics. it's not about economics. >> let's keep the conversation going. you can find us on facebook and twitter. our handle is cnnbottomline, my handle is @christineromans. join me at 1:00 p.m. for "your money." hear why bil
